Dear HWS families,
This week was Curriculum Night so I hope you had a chance to attend the sessions. I know teachers enjoyed connecting with you and answering questions about this new version of school. Hopefully, your child’s teacher explained their process for signing up for parent/teacher conferences. If they didn’t, that information will be coming out soon and will allow you to sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teacher. These meetings will be done virtually via a google meet or even just a phone call. Now more than ever, it’s important that we partner together on your child’s education.
We will start the assessment process soon but will not be completing MAPS testing this fall. Instead we are using a reading survey to assess reading levels, a math pre-assessment, and the AIMS web benchmarks which we have used in the past. This year, all students will complete an Oral Reading Fluency assessment by October 9th to see where they land as readers. These assessments are truly just to see where we stand right now. We will not be surprised if students’ skills need some refreshing given the many challenges with instruction from the spring and the long break. This data will help us see where they are and gauge improvements.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate school this year! Teachers reported lots of positive feedback from curriculum night and when you are working really hard, that positive feedback is so appreciated! While we feel our routines and procedures are working well, teachers are still developing the process for teaching students both remotely and in person. We are not expecting the “at home” students to completely fill 5 hours. At school we take time for multiple hand washing, transitions, and additional directions related to the process. Our goal is to increase the rigor as students get more comfortable with the expectations and technology but our hope is that the quality of the work is still the same for at home and at school. If your child reports that they are done with their work and it is only 11:00, perhaps ask to see what they have produced? It could be that they are rushing through to get done and move on to more preferred activities. We continue to tweak what we are doing on our end to meet students’ needs.
Have an awesome long weekend! The weather is supposed to be beautiful! On Tuesday we will see our Crimson students back at school and our Gold students will be learning at home.
Take Care,

Week 1
Welcome back!!!
We understand there are different procedures this year so we would like to take this opportunity to explain some of them.
Each family has a specific link in Powerschool assigned to their family to certify good health. We know it can be very busy in the morning while everyone gets ready for the day. PLEASE check your child’s temperature and self-certify before your child(ren) leave home.
Don’t have a thermometer? Is your thermometer over 5 years old? Do you wonder if it is accurate?
Give us a call!!! We have brand new oral thermometers!!! Please call your building nurse and we will be happy to coordinate a pickup time with you.
Is your child not feeling well? Is there someone that lives in the home that doesn’t feel well today?
If someone is not feeling well that lives in the home, please click disagree on the self-certification screener and keep every student home, regardless of which school they attend; one of the nurses will contact you. We will guide and support you through this new process.
Stay Well Batavia!
Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds WILL help stop transmission of communicable illnesses.
Mask up! And maintain 6 ft physical distance as much as possible throughout the day. These measures are working!
We know you are concerned about your student, other students, and staff when they are absent or sent home. Please know that we are looking out for the health and wellbeing of everyone at BPS101. There are specific procedures and mandates from IDPH that the Nursing team strictly adheres too. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be students/ staff that may be absent for a short period of time while we diligently work through the IDPH guidelines and protocols. Be assured that if you are a possible close contact or there is any identified risk, you will be contacted by the Nursing team personally.
