A note from the Principal:

Dear HWS Families,

Our PTO has been busy these last few weeks with our big fundraiser of Trivia Night and our school event, Science Night.  Thank you so much for all of the time and effort involved in both of these events that benefit our HWS students.

For Trivia Night, the funds raised help the PTO and one area we are working on is a refresh of the LRC.  The tables in the LRC are original to the building.  We plan on purchasing new seating for cuddling up with a good book, new tables and chairs, and repainting the library.  Hopefully, all of this will be accomplished by the beginning of next school year and we are very excited for the changes.  Your support of the PTO fundraisers make this possible for HWS.

Science Night was also organized by the PTO and Mr. Freeze was a big hit as were the student science displays.  We may have some budding physicists in our midst!

We have 2 more weeks until Spring Break and once again, I will need to make a trip to Goodwill to drop off all of the Lost and Found.  We have many coats, jackets, hats, etc.  Have your child search through the stacks by March 22nd.  Feel free to stop by yourself to make a more thorough search as well.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Gina Greenwald

Principal

A note from the LRC:

Kane County Cougars Ozzie’s Reading Club

Ozzie’s Reading Club is Underway! All HWS students are encouraged to participate in the Kane County Cougars Reading Club for 2024.  Ozzie’s Reading Club challenges students in grades K-5 to read 60 minutes each week, over the course of 8 weeks, for a total of 480 minutes.   That’s only 12 minutes a day!  All students who complete the reading challenge will earn a free ticket to a ballgame (on 05/18/24 or 05/19/24), along with a hot dog, drink and a t-shirt.   Information and reading logs were sent home with students on 02/09/24.  Reading began on 02/11/24 and will conclude 04/06/24.  Keep up the great work, Hawks!

The Battle of the Books (BoB) 2024

The Results are in!  All 15  HWS BoB teams competed in two preliminary rounds this week.  Competition was tight after round 1 with four teams earning a perfect score and tying for 1st place.  Round 2 brought tougher questions, and while the scores were very close, one team, All on the Same Page finished with another perfect score and earned their place in the District Battle.  Congratulations to all BoB participants, and a special shout out to the winning team: All on the Same Page team members: Allie Bajda, Karina Barnes, Mara Maggio and Lucy Shaw!

The District battle will take place at the Batavia Public Library on March 18th at 7:00 pm.

 The Celebration Books Program

The HWS Celebration Books program provides students an opportunity to donate a book to the LRC for birthdays, special occasions and in honor or memory of a loved one.  Thank you to the following students who donated a book to the LRC in celebration of their March birthdays and  August half-birthdays, too!   Your generous donation helps our LRC collection grow:

Morgan J. (3C), Victoria M. (2C), Delana W. (KH), Addy S. (4Zi), Francesca P. (2C), Shania A. (2C), Cheyenne G. (2Ru) and Evan H. (5W).

A note from the PE Teacher:

Thank you for helping the American Heart Association celebrate their 100th year as an organization! Many advancements and discoveries have been made in the world of heart disease, stroke, and CPR and that wouldn’t have been possible without you. Today is our final day for Kids Heart Challenge and we hope you had fun, learned something new, and are proud of the impact you helped make!

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in America and we are grateful you and your family took Kids Heart Challenge seriously, to help create heart healthy habits from the messages from our Heart Heroes, to learn how to save lives by learning hands only CPR and how to identify a stroke through Finn’s Mission, and by helping us spread awareness! The more people that know, the bigger impact we can make!

Your participation and commitment helps our school and real people in our community and we are grateful for all you do!  Donation prizes will come in 4-6 weeks!

Mr. Fink

A note from the PTO:

Thank you to all who came out and supported HWS and the PTO at this past Saturday’s Trivia Night.  And also big thanks to the PTO volunteers who made the night possible.  They did a great job transforming the VFW into a saloon and making sure it was a great time for all.

Our next PTO meeting is this upcoming Monday, March 11th in the HWS Teacher’s Lounge.  The meeting will start at 7 pm and we’ll be voting on the 2024-2025 budget as well as discussing other upcoming PTO-related topics.  Stop on by if you’re able to attend.
