Chorus Monday, February 19 – No School President’s Day A note from the Principal: Dear HWS families, We just completed our first full week of school since winter break! The crazy schedule made January fly by quickly! Sometime this month, students in grade 4 and 5 will take the 5Essentials survey during class. This is the twelfth year the Illinois State Board of Education will implement this survey across the state. This survey is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chicago. It asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree homework assignments help them learn the course material. Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found on the UChicago Impact Support Center (https://impactsurveyshelp. If you do not want your student to participate, please contact your child’s teacher. They will let you know via their class newsletters when the survey will be taken. In addition to asking for student input, we also ask for yours! The link to the parent survey is contained in this newsletter. Please take a few minutes to respond. Another way we are asking for parent involvement is through our superintendent’s Vision Session with parents. He will be inviting parents to share their ideas for the continued success of district 101. The event will be on Saturday, March 16th and if you’re interested, here is the link to RSVP. Our student council members would like to promote acts of kindness at school throughout the month of February, so they are launching an initiative called “Kindness Links Us Together.” Here’s how it works: Each teacher will receive a set of paper chain links (colored slips of paper) that can be given to any student who demonstrates an act of kindness. The student or teacher will fill out the slip, which says, “(Name) showed kindness by ________________”. There will be an envelope in each classroom for collecting the slips, and student council members will come around 1-2 times per week to gather the slips to create a paper chain to hang in the lunchroom. A great activity at home would be to brainstorm things your child could do to show kindness at school and share their successes! The world could always use a little more kindness! Thank you for all you do to support HWS! Sincerely, Gina Greenwald Principal A note from the PE Teacher: Save The Date! Kids Heart Challenge is coming to our school! We are excited to be partnering with the American Heart Association this school year and for our students to learn 7 new ways to keep their hearts happy and healthy! Click HERE to check it out and get signed up! Who do you think will be the FIRST in our school to become a lifesaver through Finn’s Mission?! A note from the LRC: Ozzie’s Reading Club is Back! All HWS students are encouraged to participate in the Kane County Cougars Reading Club for 2024. Ozzie’s Reading Club challenges students in grades K-5 to read 60 minutes each week, over the course of 8 weeks, for a total of 480 minutes. That’s only 12 minutes a day! All students who complete the reading challenge will earn a free ticket to a ballgame (05/18/24 or 05/19/24), along with a hot dog, drink and a t-shirt. Information and reading logs will be sent home with students in Friday folders on 02/09/24. Reading begins on 02/12/24 and concludes 04/08/24. Good luck readers! A note from the PTO: Science Night Mark your calendars for the first HWS Science Night on Thursday, March 7th! All grade levels can participate, and kids can even work together. The information packet has LOTS of ideas and links to sign up to participate. There will be a special performance by Fermi Lab’s very own Mr. Freeze during the event!
