A note from the Principal:

Dear HWS families,

Happy Valentine’s Day!  The students were very excited this morning to come in and wish each other a happy Valentine’s Day and were looking forward to exchanging their cards.  I shared on the announcements that today we should work on kind words and kind deeds to help everyone feel cared for at school.

Speaking of feeling cared for, our lovely PTO shared the cutest charcuterie boxes with staff today!  Everyone loved them and it was such a nice treat.  We were also surprised and extremely thankful that a group of parents brushed the snow off the teacher’s cars on Wednesday!  These gestures of kindness are so appreciated and we definitely felt the love from our PTO.  Thank you!

We are headed towards the end of our 2nd trimester of school. On February 25th we will send out the student’s new reflection so you can see their progress.  Things can get dreary during these winter months but we still need to buckle down and move forward with our learning.

Wishing you a lovely long weekend!  We will see you on Tuesday after enjoying Monday off for President’s Day.

Sincerely,

Gina Greenwald

Principal

A note about Running Club:

Running club is back, and we are ready to start Wednesday, March 5th! We hope to see many third, fourth and fifth graders out there as it is a fun way to get some exercise and to build some healthy habits. We will meet in the art room on Wednesdays after school from 3:30-4:30. Contact Mrs. Fleming (art teacher) or Miss Fors (first grade) with any questions.

A note from the PE teacher:

Dear Hoover Wood Elementary School families,

Kids Heart Challenge is wrapping up soon, and we are so proud of all we have accomplished!  Your enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to learning about our hearts and brains have created an incredible community of heart heroes!

The challenge isn’t over yet! There’s still time to make a difference, please sign-up and join our school’s team of lifesavers. Together, we can reach our goal and continue spreading awareness about the importance of heart and brain health.

Remember, every action counts. Whether it’s learning about Hands-Only CPR, understanding the warning signs of heart attack and stroke, or simply sharing our cause with friends and family, together we are making an impact.

Additional information:

HWS is looking for a Top Dog!

The HWS Watch D.O.G.S. program is looking for a new Top Dog to help organize and run the program for the 2025-2026 school year.  For those not familiar with the program, Watch D.O.G.S. are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer for a one-half day each year at school.  During the day, WATCH D.O.G.S. may help students with class work, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students but other students as well.

After 9 years as Top Dog, Ryan Korn will be passing the torch as his youngest child moves on to 6th grade next year.  For the most part, the Top Dog works with HWS staff to plan the Watch D.O.G.S. schedule for the school year and then communicate with parents about signing up and following up as needed.

If you are interested or have questions about this volunteer opportunity, please get in touch with Ryan at Rskorn82@yahoo.com.

HWS Kindergarten

Have a neighbor, family member, yourself or friend who has a student that will be turning five by September 1, 2025, that they are considering entering kindergarten at a BPS101 elementary school for the 2025-2026 school year?  Batavia Public School District 101 strongly encourages families of incoming kindergarten students to begin the enrollment process. We are looking for as many registrations entered before we leave for Spring Break. Visit our website to register: bps101.net/kindergarten or on Facebook.  Knowing how many new students we will be receiving early greatly assists in determining the number of sections we will require.

We will continue with weekly Messengers on Fridays throughout the school year. All school messengers can also be found on our News Wall.

Please be sure to check out the Backpack Mail View the latest edition of Backpack Mail > link that is attached to The District Weekly BPS messengers. Good community events are listed!
