A note from the Principal: SOPPA – Parent Message SOPPA Update – Additional Programs Blocked Starting January 1st Beginning on July 1, 2021, school districts were required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) to provide additional guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies, and that data is used for beneficial purposes only (105 ILCS 85). Since then, the BPS101 tech team has audited nearly 750 products used within the district and attempted to establish privacy agreements with all the companies, websites, and databases that store student data. Many companies have complied and their products are in continued use within the district. When companies do not work with us to meet the benchmarks of student data privacy that are required under SOPPA, we have had to stop using them. Most recently, access to EPIC and Xtra math ended on January 1, 2023 due to unmet privacy agreements. Batavia Public Schools takes data security seriously. Our staff will continue to be mindful of the tools and products that they are using and our tech team continues to audit new products used by the students of BPS101.
