I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are ready to be back to your routines and schedules. One thing we will be doing this week is discussing the rules and expectations for school. After a break, students sometimes need reminders that school is a place of learning and to be great students, we need to focus, do our best work, and be kind to our peers. It can be an adjustment after 2 weeks of fun. As you may know, our school as well as all of the elementary schools in the district, are implementing CHAMPS. CHAMPS Classroom Management System is designed to clearly communicate expectations to your students. It’s not a system of rules and consequences. Its goal is to stop behavior issues before they even happen. As we head into winter weather, please keep in mind that class begins at 9:00am. Students entering the building after 9:00am are late to school and may receive a tardy. Three tardies to school equals one absence in our school record keeping and could result in truancy letters, etc. Help your child start a good lifelong habit of being on time! This may require leaving the house a few minutes earlier than normal as more families are driving their children to school in the colder weather. Speaking of colder weather, this is my annual reminder that we will go outside for a 20-minute recess unless it feels like 0 or below. Please make sure that your child is prepared for the weather with the most important items being mittens or gloves and hats! In order to play in the snow, children need boots and snow pants. Without these items, students will need to stay on the blacktop. These first few weeks back, we will also have some standardized testing. Starting on Wednesday of this week, we were doing AIMs testing. For students in grades 2-5, this is just a quick check to see if students are reading accurately and improving their fluency. For our younger students, we will also assess math skills and letter sounds. These assessments allow us to make sure that students are progressing since we first administered them in August. There will be one more round of testing at the end of the school year. Additionally, starting on January 13th, we also have MAP testing. You received your child’s MAP scores after the first testing cycle, and now we test again to make sure students are progressing. While it seems like we test a lot, all of these measures are to make sure students continue to progress and to identify any student who would benefit from additional support. Sincerely, Gina Greenwald Principal STEM Club for 4th & 5th Graders If your student enjoys Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, they may sign up for STEM Club!
