A note from the Principal:

Dear HWS families,

As we head into the Labor Day weekend, I just want to share how proud I am of the students this year!  They have jumped right back into the school routine, and our kindergarten students are doing great as well.  It’s hard to believe we’ve only been back for a little over 2 weeks!

September 12th is our school Open House from 6-7pm.  The curriculum information will be sent home electronically for parents to view on their own.  It may be a video or a slide deck where you receive information about what your child will be learning this year.  If, after watching that you have additional questions, teachers will be here at HWS from 6-7pm for you to pop in and ask a question or to meet the teacher in person if you were not able to attend our ice-cream social.  You can attend for 10 minutes or the full hour – it’s up to you!  Our Specials teachers will be available for questions as well.  Please remember that these are not individual parent/teacher conferences.  You will have the opportunity to ask about your child’s progress in October. If you have already met the teacher and have no additional questions, feel no pressure to attend.  We will be here if you need us though!

As we get going into the year, I wanted to remind you of some procedures for our Diamond Lane car pick-up.  I’ve noticed it has been getting a little backed up lately in the afternoons and the problem seems to be that folks are parking, going through the crosswalk to pick up their child, and then trying to back up into the flow of traffic to leave their parking space.  While it may seem a quicker option, if everyone uses the Diamond Lane and stays in their car, the process actually goes much more quickly.  Please don’t forget to move all the way up as your child will enter the car after you have crossed the crosswalk.  Additionally, please do not park in the front parking lot along the path of the buses. We had a car get hit the other day as they were parked along the side of the lot and the bus hit them as they were turning the corner.  We want you and your children to be safe! The school pick-up and drop-off process can always be a little frustrating, but if we all work together, it will help!

Sincerely,

Gina Greenwald

Principal

A note from the LRC

The LRC is getting into full swing. First off, we had a wonderful renovation and now that the students are experiencing it, they love the new LRC, not just for the books.  While the students are getting books every week, they can engage with some of their favorite authors through Illinois’ longest independent bookstore, Andersons.  Every month they have many author events for all ages.  Each event usually includes a meet and greet, book, signing session and Q&A. The following authors will be in the area for the month of September:  Max Greenfield, James Ponti, Jasmine Warga, Jana Tropper, Rob Harrell, Patrick Ness, and Kwame Alexander.  More information can be found here at https://andersonsbookshop.com/
